Shutting the Isle of Wight's dual carriageway on the morning of Sunday, May 19 is necessary, Island Roads insists, after concerns were raised about how the closure would impact a popular event.

Medina Way is being closed between 6am and 10am, which will coincide with car enthusiasts descending on the County Showground, Northwood, for the Isle of Wight Takeover.

Those attending the event have questioned the timing of the closure.

One person said: "They did this last year too. Why would they shut that road knowing it’s going to be busy that morning?"

Island Roads admits there is never a ‘right time’ to close Medina Way, but it will do all it can to reduce disruption.

A spokesperson said: "By ensuring we start work at 6am and finish by 10am – the advertised start time of Takeover – we are confident that this part-closure should not impact upon the event.

"Even during the closure, people will be able to travel to the site, albeit via a very short diversion which has proved effective many times in the past.”

Both lanes of the carriageway will be affected while grassing cutting is carried out.

Traffic will be diverted via Dodnor and Riverway, with vehicles re-joining the dual carriageway at the Curry’s slip road.

Northbound traffic will be diverted by the Lidl slip road and roundabout via Hunnycross Way and Hunnyhill.

Island Roads is carrying out the work on a Sunday morning to reduce impact on road users.

The diversion routes are frequently used during Medina Way maintenance and, given the day and time of works, Island Roads said it is not anticipating significant delays for traffic during the diversion.
